Muslim Conference gets majority seats in AJK assembly

13 Jul, 2006

Though the ruling Muslim Conference (MC) has emerged as a largest group, no party could get clear majority in Tuesday 's elections of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly.
According to unofficial results announced by the AJK Election Commission, out of 41 contested seats, Muslim Conference captured 19 seats, People's Party won eight seats, People's Muslim League three, and MQM won one seat.
Four Independents also won the polls. The polls pushed the state towards formation of a coalition government, most probably led by the Muslim Conference. Despite several odds the opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) succeeded to emerge again as second largest party of the state.
President of the MC Sardar Atiq Ahmed Khan, PPP President Sahibzada Ishaq Zafar, Chief of the Peoples Muslim League Barrister Sultan Mehmood and Chief of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Party (JKPP) Sardar Khalid Ibrahim Khan won their traditional seats from Bagh, Muzaffarabad, Mirpur and Rawalakot respectively.
Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal leader Sardar Ijaz Afzal however failed to secure a seat in the LA as he was badly defeated in LA-19 Poonch-3 by the JKPP Chief Sardar Khalid Ibrahim Khan.
