Problems at Post Office

14 Jul, 2006

PMG (Sindh) Muhammad Ahmed Mian in his press clarification of 28-06-2006 has vindicated the smooth functioning of post offices in his circle and disagreed with the prevailing mismanagement. It shows his unawareness of some factors, as the ground reality differs.
In fact, there is only one sub-post office-75290 in block-14 for postal services to about 1.5 million citizens living in 20 blocks of Gulistan-e-Jouhar, a hub of hundreds of high rise residential and commercial buildings. The location of the PO is hidden amid deep the residential streets. It is situated far from public vision without any indicators guiding the public to reach it.
The most important factor of a commercial location for the general public service has been ignored in choosing the site of this PO. There is neither any GPO nor other PO in the whole of Gulistan-e-Jouhar, which is depriving the public of postal facilities. As a result, they are forced to go to far distant POs for their postal needs.
Mismanagement, indiscipline, shortage of staff and negligence of duty persists in this PO. There is no fixed time of its opening and closing. The staff posted there works and entertains the public according to their ease and it seldom functions in the evening shift. Only one skeleton staff attends to all the postal services at his ease and the rest of the staff either is not seen or does not attend to the public.
The acceptance of utility bills, UMS, money orders and even ordinary mails are often refused on account of non-availability of postal stamps, un-serviceability of stamping machine, staff shortage and no arrangement of security to guard cash dealings.
Further, the incoming mails at the residences in Gulistan-e-Jouhar are delivered once a week only, on account of manpower shortage, as excused by the post master. This PO also lacks the required furniture, stationary electric fans, light, water and seats for its staff and senior citizens to sit. The staffs' behaviour in public dealings at this PO is rude, insulting.
Why should the residents of Gulistan-e-Jouhar suffer in their time money to go to far distant post offices and why has the PMG (Sindh) not yet resolved this long prevailing problem at this PO? Why are arrangements not undertaken to open a few more POs and one GPO in this big area? Numerous public complaints in this regard, addressed to PMG (Sindh) & DGPO, are not yet addressed.
Therefore, the Prime Minister is requested to take cognisance of the matter and arrange corrective measures at PO-75290, besides opening of few more POs and at least one GPO with evening service facilities for this big area in the larger public interest.
