The NWFP University of Engineering and Technology (UET), in pursuance with the policy of initiating cutting-edge disciplines in the field of engineering, has decided to start industrial engineering from this year. The decision of establishing a full fledge department unanimously been approved by the UET syndicate in its 72nd meeting held on July 15.
The programme will offer B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Industrial Engineering. The classes will commence from September with an initial intake of 30 students. An eligibility criterion for selection in M.Sc. engineering is B.Sc. engineering, preferably in industrial engineering or B.Sc. in mechanical engineering.
Briefing the meeting, Industrial Engineering Department Chairman Dr Iftikhar Hussain said that industrial engineering was a unique discipline and the UET had got the credit of opening this department for the first time by offering M.Sc. and B.Sc. courses in industrial engineering programmes in Pakistan. Before that, this subject was taught as part-time study at under-graduate level in engineering universities.
He further said that under this programme, the students would have a chance to learn the basics of designing and improving the major systems. About the scope for jobs, he said the subject would help produce highly qualified persons.
He said the industrial engineering dealt with people and would bridges the gap between management and operations, because the degree-holder had the expertise to find the right combination of human resources, material resources, including equipment and set-ups. Therefore, lots of placement opportunities would be available in the job market, he added.-PR
