The Chief Justice of Pakistan has directed the Kot Lakhpat jail authorities to act in accordance with the laws otherwise he would pay a visit to the jail to see the situation prevailing there.
The Chief Justice, while expressing dissatisfaction over the report of district and sessions judge Lahore pertaining to the jail inmates in fitters, has directed him to visit Kot Lakhpat jail and prepare a comprehensive report about inmates in fitters.
The Chief Justice passed these orders during the course of suo motu proceedings on a letter from a jail inmate Azhar Shah. He observed that the jail authorities are duty bound to maintain discipline in jail and nobody could be allowed to violate the law.
The assistant superintendent jail appeared before the court and informed that only IG prisons with prior approval of the court could keep any jail inmate in fitters. The court observed that a jail inmate even could not be kept in fitters for unlimited time. The court directed the district and sessions judge to visit the jail and submit a report by next week.
