The Muslim Ummah is watching helplessly the mass scale killings of civilians in Lebanon for the last ten days. Not a word has been uttered to rush in for their assistance from any Muslim country or the West. Even the UN apart from condemning the attack has done nothing to intervene.
The ground attack by Israeli forces is yet to commence. The air has done its job of softening the opposition on the ground for the Israeli tanks to move and the infantry to occupy Lebanon. Whether the offensive will be pushed to Syria and threaten Iran is not known.
This offensively has the same pattern of US attacking Iraq or Afghanistan, where in both the countries they destroyed the infrastructure to paralyse the countries. The silence adopted by the US will have its impact on the Arab World, as so far they were relying on US efforts for peace.
This push by Israel has ripped apart the so-called peace process orchestrated by the US and the real aims and objectives have started to surface. Whether the Muslim Ummah should rely on the UN is a question that boggles every mind. The Muslim World should on the basis of their number fight for a permanent member seat on the Security Council with a right to veto. It is time that the world should think of revamping the UN as it has lost its utility where its strength has been eroded by a major world power.
In the meantime rescue/relief operations in way of food supplies/medicines under UN arrangement should be sent through UN convoys from the neighbouring countries. The Muslim World should jump into the aid effort by the UN. No country in the World except the US will oppose this move, which should be passed in the General Assembly and made operative. This can only save the UN image the otherwise UN will die its natural death.
