People will reject opposition's drive: minister

31 Jul, 2006

Minister for Defence Sikandar Iqbal on Sunday said that the opposition would never succeed in their plan to launch anti-government movement because people have badly rejected similar calls in the past.
He said that the enlightened citizens of the country could not be misled by the hollow slogans of opposition as they are the best judge, and know about the remarkable economic and social performance of the government. He expressed these views while talking to a group of newsmen here on Sunday.
The Minister said that the present government represents the true aspirations of the people and has achieved significant economic and social development.
He said it seemed irrational on the part of opposition to launch a movement at a time when the democratic institutions in the country are successfully functioning and Pakistan is fast moving ahead on the way to economic and social development.
He advised the opposition to shun the confrontationist path and play its role for promoting and strengthening democratic values in the country.
He said that the country was facing a number of challenges, and the current geo-political situation demanded national unity and integration whereas the opposition had embarked upon confrontationist plan to create chaos and confusion in the country.
He said the policies of the present government needed commendation for its outstanding economic achievements and curbing the menaces of extremism and terrorism.
He said that it was owing to the wise and prudent policies of the present government, under the leadership of President General Pervez Musharraf, which elevated the image of the country among the comity of nations.
Regarding re-election of President, Sikandar said that the existing assemblies could elect President for the second term, and his party would fully support Musharraf's re-election.
