Bulgaria's wheat crop falls

02 Aug, 2006

Bulgaria expects an overall wheat crop of 3.1 million tonnes, in line with the farm ministry's forecast but still below last year's 3.48 million tonnes, a senior agriculture official said on Tuesday.
Deputy Agriculture Minister Svetla Bachvarova said 94 percent of the 942,000 hectares planted to wheat had already been harvested and 3.05 million tonnes put in silos. "We expect to harvest 3.1 million tonnes of wheat. The yield per hectare is better this year, but the crop is smaller due to less acreage," she told reporters.
