Concern voiced over Scarp divisions' abolition

07 Aug, 2006

The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) at a meeting here on Sunday expressed grave concern over the abolition of Salinity Control And Reclamation Project (Scarp) division of the irrigation department and the inordinate delay in completion of the Chotiyarioon dam. Murad Ali Khan Talpur presided over the meeting.
The members informed meeting that notwithstanding the shortage of irrigation water, the government had decided to abolish the Scarp divisions, which were responsible for providing water to the growers through tube-wells.
The meeting observed that a large number of Scarp tube-wells were lying out of order for the last many years but no steps were taken to make them operational.
The meeting adopted a resolution demanding of the government not to abolish the Scarp divisions and to take immediate steps for repairs of the tube-wells.
Expressing concern over the inordinate delay in the completion of Chotiyarioon dam, the meeting urged the government to complete the construction of the dam without delay to meet shortage of water. It also criticised the officials for failure to provide relief to the rain affected people of Badin district.
