Ganguly and Kumble get one-day lifeline

10 Aug, 2006

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly and veteran leg-spinner Anil Kumble got a chance to revive one-day careers when they were named Wednesday among probables for the Champions Trophy.
Ganguly's future had generated heated debate across the country since he was sacked as captain and axed from the team following a public spat with coach Greg Chappell last year.
Left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan and middle-order batsman Venkatsai Laxman were also named among 30 probables announced by Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah. Ganguly, only the second Indian after Sachin Tendulkar to complete 10,000 runs in the shorter version of the game, played his last one-dayer in September.
Kumble, currently playing for Surrey in the English County championship, made his last one-day appearance for the country in the Asia Cup final against Sri Lanka at Colombo in 2005. He has far bagged 329 wickets in 264 one-day matches.
The final 14-member squad for the October-November tournament in India will be announced on September 7.
