Khuhro slams unfair attitude of speaker

19 Aug, 2006

Leader of the Opposition Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, talking to newsmen after the adjournment of the session on Friday till August 29, said that the government wanted to gag the opposition inside and outside the assemblies.
He criticised the speaker for his partial attitude and said that he continues to look towards the treasury members to receive instruction from them and to act accordingly.
He said that the speaker runs the session as the government wants him to run and in doing so he ignores his moral and constitutional responsibilities where each member is to be heard and given chance to represent his/her constituents. In his view Rafique Enfineer wanted to exercise his moral responsibilities, which he was denied. "It is unfortunate," he added.
Khuhro said that as usual the session was called on Friday to gain two days as paid holidays. "During these eleven days of adjournment there would be no one to talk about the plight of the rain affected people," he added. He said that the rains were there for the last three weeks and it was only today that the government realised its responsibilities. "Where were they during these three weeks. Were people not under distress and were not they in need of their company. Were they not asking for help from their MPAs?"
He said that it was a principled stand/demand that the people, who lost their lives and properties, should be compensated and this was what Hameedullah wanted to impress upon the government. Khuhro said he knew that there would be no survey and no relief for the affected people." We do not have confidence in what they say."
Nasrullah Shajih of the JI, who joined Khuhro at the press conference, said that rains had exposed the performance of the City District Government, Karachi. The entire city had been tattered. "There is no system in place to deal with the affects of rains, water has accumulated in roads, sewers are choked and water supply has broken down."
He criticised preparation of electoral roll given to MQM and said seeds for rigging had been sown. Syed Qaim Ali Shah and members of the opposition were present at the press conference.
