Users of a contact lens solution which was recently withdrawn from the Irish and world-wide markets were more than 20 times as likely to develop a serious eye infection as non-users, according to a new study.
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study in the US found that 164 confirmed cases of the infection Fusarium keratitis were reported in the US between June 2005 and June 2006. Ninety-four percent of these cases were among soft contact lens users, USA today reported.
When the researchers compared the risk of infection among contact lens wearers they found that users of the recalled solution ReNu with MoistureLoc were more than 20 times as likely to develop the infection as those not using the solution.
Following the withdrawal by the manufacturers Bausch and Lomb, contact lens wearers were advised to switch to an alternative solution.
