02 Sep, 2006

Speakers at a seminar held here on Thursday called upon the government to take all possible measures to protect the rights of women.
The seminar's theme was "Women's rights and their protection". Mukhtar Mai chaired the seminar, while District Nazim Sardar Abdul Qayyum Jatoi attended the session as chief guest. The speakers included, among others, Mukhtar Mai, Raashid Rahman, Jamshed Ahmed Dasti and several feminists.
The speakers called upon the government to finalise the proposed amendments to the Hudood Ordinance, which was often misused against women, particularly rape victims.
Mukhtar Mai vowed to safeguard women's rights at all forums, and stressed the need for educating womenfolk, as it was a key to their emancipation from oppression and medieval customs.
