No US pressure on Hudood bill: Durrani

07 Sep, 2006

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani has said that the Hudood ordinance amendment bill is not put forward under US pressure. Talking to a private TV channel, the minister said that legislation was the right of National Assembly and bill is already there.
He said that a committee was set up, which worked on it and gave it a shape, adding that its opposition would be an undemocratic attitude. To a question about the MMA resignations from the Balochistan Assembly and Parliament he said that MMA was making only announcements, adding, "We have become fed up with the comments on their announcements, as they lack action."
He said that the Bill was in the assembly and they should discuss it on the assembly floor. The minister said that it was the government's determination that legislation should be done in the light of Holy Quran and Sunnah. The opposition parties are divided on their stance and opinions. Instead of discussing the issue in the press, they should discuss it in the parliament, he advised the MMA.
