Interior Minister Aftab Ahmad Sherpao on Friday said that the visit of President Pervez Musharraf to Afghanistan was very important and it would open a new chapter of bilateral relations between the two countries.
Talking to PTV, he said the response from Afghanistan was positive and the presidents of both the countries resolved that all misunderstandings between the two countries should be removed. They also agreed to co-operate with each other in the war against terrorism, he added.
He said President Pervez Musharraf emphasised that Pakistan wanted stability and peace in Afghanistan, which would increase trade and strengthen the bilateral relations. Aftab Sherpao said in a meeting held with Afghan members of parliament, intellectuals and ministers, President Pervez Musharraf described in detail the present situation of the region.
The president emphasised that as neighbours with the same religion and culture, both countries should co-operate for their common aims, the minister added. Afghan President Hamid Karzai shared the views of his counterpart and said that misunderstandings were removed during the visit, Sherpao added.
He said the two sides decided that there should be more interaction at government-to-government level. People-to-people contacts should also be increased and communication channels should be made more effective. Both countries have mutual interests and Pakistan did not want instability or any terrorist activity in Afghanistan, he added.
The minister said reason behind the agreement in Waziristan was that Pakistan wanted an end to cross border terrorism, training or presence of foreigners in the area.
