To inculcate sense of traffic rules among children, the Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) have launched kids traffic awareness programme and authorised children to issue verbal warning to the drivers on violation of traffic rules.
For the purpose, the teams of ITP visited schools and conducted tests of children about traffic rules after delivering lectures. The candidates who qualify the test are issued cards valid for one year.
The holder of this particular card can issue verbal warning to drivers on the following violations:- Over-speeding, red light, use of mobile phone, standing on zebra crossing and no parking.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Dr Sultan Azam Temuri said that civic sense from childhood is essential." We are focusing the school-going children and teams of traffic police are delivering lectures at schools to inculcate sense about traffic rules from the initial age," he said while talking to APP.
To a question, the SSP said that during rush hours (7am to 9am and 1pm to 3pm) the traffic is controlled manually to facilitate the road-users.
"Especially in the areas having cluster of schools, police officers are deputed to control traffic before and after school hours," he added.
The SSP said more than 250 school children are being provided pick and drop facility daily by the shuttle service introduced owing efforts of ITP.
He said ITP is also considering to run more buses for school children so that traffic mess at peak hours can be reduced.
Dr Temuri appealed the parents whose children are studying at educational institutions in same vicinity, to send at least four neighbouring children in one vehicle instead of separate motors.
