'Mafia against environment very strong in country'

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Malik Amin Aslam has said that joint efforts by the government and civil society are needed to overcome the environmental problems effectively.
"The government alone cannot handle the issue properly. We need support of our people, civil society and also judicial activism", the Minister told Voice of Germany.
He said that anti-environment mafia is very strong in country and it does not consider environment problem as an important issue. An individual commits the crime and entire nation has to share the consequence. To a question he said the government is committed to provide clean drinking water to all citizens by year 2007.
He said that according to millennium targets, Pakistan has to provide clean drinking water to all the citizens by years 2015 adding but realising the sensitivity of the matter government has adopted an advance approach in this connection.
