16 Oct, 2006

Medium Tax Unit, Karachi, has carried out desk audit of income tax returns received by 30th September and finalised more than 4000 cases of refunds claiming up to Rs 10,000. These would be dispatched at the addresses of assesses by the end of October 2006.
Commissioner MTU, Asrar Rauf, said on Saturday that it was for the first time in the history of the department that returns received up to 30th September could be audited expeditiously and decision on refunds taken.
The decision to dispatch refunds at the addresses of the assesses would facilitate people in getting their claims without hassle. It would also help taxpayers build confidence in the working of the income tax department.
President All Pakistan Tax Bar Association Yunus Rizwani and President Karachi Income Tax Bar Association Ali Rahim have appreciated this step of the MTU and suggested to the Central Board of Revenue (CBR) to replicate this system throughout Pakistan and include all cases of refund.
Rahim said that the exercise had proved that the system was workable and could be adopted in all cases of refund. "It is better if cases of all refunds, irrespective of amount involved, are dealt with in the same manner and payments are dispatched at the address of the assesses."
