18 Oct, 2006

A Division Bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) comprising Chief Justice Sabihuddin Ahmed and Justice Zawwar Hussain Jaffri ordered National Transmission and Distribution Company (NTDC), Hub Power Company (Hubco) and the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) to submit, on November 15.
All information relating to the problem of shortage of electricity in Karachi, and how this can be addressed. During hearing of a constitutional petition filed by Nadeem Ahmed, Advocate, of Ahmed and Qazi, on behalf of all Karachiites here on Tuesday it was pointed out that due to total lack of expertise, experience and even physical presence of the new owners of KESC in Karachi, there was slim chance that the crisis of current shortfall could resolve by itself.
The petition, therefore, asked for setting up a 'commission' with the mandate to make all parties sit and work together and, after obtaining information from all relevant parties, to submit a report to SHC on exactly how this current crisis of electricity shortfall can be resolved. Abdul Hafeez Peerzada appeared for KESC, Dr Amjad H Bokhari appeared for the petitioner, and Qazi Faiz Isa appeared for Hubco. The SHC fixed November 15 as next date of hearing.
