19 Oct, 2006

The Supreme Court dismissed bail application of Raja Zarait Kiani, chairman, Bawan Shah Group of Companies, Karachi, as withdrawn here on Wednesday.
CBR counsel Abdul Hafeez Pirzada submitted before the court that Raja Zarait Kiani was arrested on the charges that his Group of Companies used to import fabric without payment of duty on the pretext that they would make value-addition and export ladies garments.
The CBR director (investigation), Karachi, intercepted four containers and one was also opened under the orders of the Sindh High Court. It was found that the goods being exported were mis-declared, over-valued and were different from the goods shown in the export documents.
He said that the Group Chairman Raja Zarait's bail application was rejected by the Special Judge and the Sindh High Court. On being told that Raja Zarait was in hospital for past six month, the court asked as to why such type of facilities were granted unless there were strong medical reasons for giving such facilities.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry observed that it seems in our country jails are meant only for the poor and not for the rich people. The counsel for the petitioner Ibrahim Satti withdrew the bail application and the court dismissed it as withdrawn.
