Foreign Minister Khurshid M. Kasuri has telephoned South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon in New York to congratulate him on his election as the new Secretary General of the United Nations.
He told him that his unanimous election was a manifestation of his leadership qualities, diplomatic acumen and rich experience, a foreign office statement said on Wednesday.
Both of them recalled their meeting in New York last month as well as their close co-operation and co-ordination on the issue of UN reform over the years.
Kasuri expressed the hope that under his leadership, the UN would be able to make progress on its reform agenda including the reform of the Security Council, which should be more democratic and accountable and not create new centres of privilege. The Foreign Minister assured the new Secretary General of Pakistan's full support and co-operation in carrying out his work.
Secretary General designate, Ban Ki-Moon, told Foreign Minister Kasuri that he wished to remain engaged with him and with Pakistan on the challenges facing the world. He told the Foreign Minister that Pakistan was an important Muslim country with whose leaders he wanted to keep in close touch.
