A bomb blast and an ambush by gunmen on a convoy of buses near the town of Baquba killed 13 police recruits on Sunday and several more recruits were kidnapped, a local official said. Another 25 police recruits were wounded, the official said.
The official said the buses were taking the police recruits to Baghdad from a base, which was attacked by insurgents using mortars and rifle fire on Saturday. The attack on Saturday left many dead and 80 casualties, the official said.
Two more US soldiers have been killed in Iraq, the military said Sunday, bringing to five the number now known to have been killed in the previous day's fighting.
One US marine was killed in the western province of Anbar, the military said a statement, which followed an earlier report from the military that three more marines had been killed there. In addition, and army soldier was killed and three more wounded "as a result of enemy action while conducting actions in Salaheddin province."
