Nawaz and Benazir's return may cause instability: Musharraf

23 Oct, 2006

President General Pervez Musharraf has said that if Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto were permitted to come back to Pakistan before 2007 elections, then political instability was imminent. He expressed this view in a private TV channel talk relayed on Sunday night.
President Musharraf acknowledged that the Federation currently was not stronger as compared to seven years ago. He denied that he had gone to America with the Women Rights Bill. President Musharraf also refuted General Zeni's assertion in his book that he (Musharraf) had persuaded Nawaz for a cease-fire in Kargil.
Regarding seeking proposals from opposition parties for appointment of Election Commissioner, he said that proposals were sought from opposition parties, but they refrained from giving any. About presidential address to parliament, he said that no one should make noise on this occasion. Regarding meeting with Benazir and Nawaz, he countered why he should play his card.
