Several thousand villagers held an angry demonstration in occupied Kashmir on Sunday to protest the killing in custody of a 19-year-old farmer, residents said.
Slogans including "We want freedom" and "Punish the killers" were chanted by more than 2,000 villagers as they marched through Pakharpora village, about 50km south-west of here. Maqbool Dar was arrested by the army from his Pakharpora home on Friday, and his body was returned late on Saturday. "We had just broken our fast on Friday when a group of soldiers dashed into a room and took him away," his father Mohammed Ramzan told reporters.
He said that Maqbool was tortured to death by the army, and that a delegation of villagers were beaten up outside the camp by soldiers when they had gone there on Friday evening to seek his release. Indian army said it was "investigating the allegation".
