Sugar imports seen falling by half

Pakistan's sugar imports in 2007 are likely to fall by about 50 percent from this year's level because Islamabad has imposed a 15 percent duty on imports, a leading industry official said on Thursday.
"I think Pakistan will import about half of what it bought this year," Narendra Murkumbi, Managing Director of Shree Renuka Sugars Limited, a leading Indian sugar firm, told Reuters. He was speaking on the sidelines of a biofuels conference. Pakistan has bought a lot of sugar from India since last year to meet its domestic shortfall.
