Misleading health information

03 Nov, 2006

There is no check on wall chalking, where ads from quacks, swindlers and others claim "guaranteed cure" of every ailment, including hard-to-cure diseases. Even a section of print and electronic media give extraordinary space to such advertisements.
These advertisements not only cause physical hazards, but also create psychological problems for the already depressed patients. The illiterate and lower middle class are attracted by such advertisements of quacks and swindlers. These ads are depriving people of their money as well as destroying their health and lives.
Our total health budget is very low. Doctors lack professionalism. Despite huge funding no medication is provided to patients at government hospitals. The media should highlight such issues. The community already faces genuine health issues. Irresponsible attitude of government and health department authorities are deplorable.
As per the drug rules, newspapers, magazines and electronic media need to seek NOC from federal government for publishing and broadcasting ads for drugs and federal health inspectors are authorised to check and prohibit appearance of such advertisements. Drug inspectors should approach media organisations to check irregularities.
