Police to recommend laws against IMEI tampering

08 Nov, 2006

The Sindh police have decided to submit recommendations to the provincial government for legislation for taking action against those involved in tampering with International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) and making the snatched/stolen cell phone sets re-useable.
A meeting, presided over by Sindh Inspector General of Police Jahangir Mirza, took the decision here on Tuesday. It was informed that according to some press reports, certain elements were making operative the blocked IMEI for stolen/snatched cell phone sets, therefore, it requires new legislation for netting the culprits and prescribing punishment for committing this crime.
DIG Investigation Zone-II informed the meeting that there had been no evidence about any such software during the survey of mobile phone or other markets in the city, however, despite that any possibility could not be ruled out in this regard.
The IGP, who had called the meeting to discuss effective measures for combating street crimes, directed the CCPO that the Town Police Officers, SDPOs and SHOs themselves should monitor the steps against street crimes and ensure random snap checking under their own supervision.
He stressed close co-ordination among all the branches and special units of police force for nabbing the street criminals and warned that concerned TPO, SDPO and SHO would be held responsible for failure in combating the street crimes. He made it clear that no excuse would be acceptable in this regard.
Jahangir Mirza also directed to maintain record of arrested street criminals, including their photographs, finger-prints and other details that should be shifted to police web site. Acting CCPO Tariq Jamil, Additional IG Investigation, Addl. IG Special Branch, DIG Headquarter, DIG Operations, SSP ACLC and other high-ranking officers attended the meeting.
