Indonesia extends rice import deadline

11 Nov, 2006

Indonesian's trade ministry has extended a delivery deadline for 210,000 tonnes of rice imports from Vietnam to December 15 from November 15 due to concerns over bad weather, state logistics agency Bulog said on Friday.
The trade ministry had initially set the rice import delivery time from October 1 to November 15. "We have received a ministerial decree dated November 3 saying that the deadline has been extended until December 15 due to possible disruption from bad weather off Ho Chi Minh port," Bulog spokesman Fatah Yasin told Reuters.
Indonesia's Bulog signed deals on September 22 with three Vietnamese trading houses to buy 210,000 tonnes of rice in a move to shore up government stocks depleted by a string of natural disasters. Vietnam was hit by Typhoon Xangsane in October, killing more than 50 people. The typhoon's fierce winds and rain destroyed or damaged hundreds of thousands of homes when it slammed into Vietnam's central coast.
