An oil barge transporting heating oil to New York City ran aground in the East Rockaway Inlet near its delivery point early on Sunday, according to the US Coast Guard.
The 2,160-dwt barge Kristin Poling, which was loaded with 298,200 gallons of heating oil, had to transfer its oil cargo to another barge before it was freed with help from a tug boat on the same day.
The barge is owned by Poling and Cutler. The grounding did not cause any oil spill or damage to the hull. As a precaution, the unified command deployed an oil recovery boom, vacuum trucks, oil skimmers, work boats and contractors to protect the natural resources in that area.
