The government has decided to encourage quality exploration of precious stones in Northern Areas and boost value-added exports of gems. According to gem and jewellery sources here on Wednesday, the government of NWFP will lease out areas of Emerald and Topaz to quality companies having expertise in high quality exploration and value addition of gemstones.
These firms should have expertise in mechanised mining, cutting, polishing of gemstones, sources added. The government will also examine the financial and managerial strength of these firms. The sources said that 76 acres of area will be leased out for 10 years in Ghari, Swat district and 50 acres of land in Gujar Kili, Shangla district for Emerald exploration.
