Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz said on Saturday that the passage of Women Protection Bill was in the national interest, and those who were using it for political benefit were misusing the trust and confidence of the people.
Talking to newsmen here at Prime Minister Secretariat, he said that people are conscious of their rights, and know the importance and dignity of vote.
Referring to the threat of resignations by MMA from the Assemblies, he said that they (MMA) along with other members of parliament had been elected to fulfil their responsibilities according to the trust and confidence of the people, and therefore they should fulfil their duty.
He said that no one should take political benefit from the passage of the bill, as it was purely to protect the rights of women.
He said the politics of resignation was a disgrace to the respect and dignity of the vote. Referring to the passage of the Women Protection Bill, the Prime Minister said that all parties present in the house on November 15 had favoured the bill, as no one voted against it.
He said there would be more legislation's for protection and empowerment of the women and the national spirit on this issue would continue. He said that the passage of more legislation's would strengthen the democratic process in the country.
About the threat of resignations, he said that action would be taken according to the law, if they tendered resignations.
Replying to a question about approval of US-India civil nuclear deal by American Congress, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan would fulfil its civil nuclear needs as the demand for electricity has been increasing due to record economic growth.
He reiterated that there should be level playing field for civil nuclear energy, and it should not be country-specific. The Prime Minister said that Pakistan would defend its interests on the issue of civil nuclear energy. Answering an other question, he said that the Women Protection Bill was a first step in the long journey towards empowerment of women.
