Senate special committee for housing and construction has directed that authority of housing allotment, under discretionary powers, should be given to the Prime Minister, instead of the housing minister.
The committee took this decision in a meeting on Saturday held in the Parliament House. Its chairman, Farooq Naik presided.
The decision has been taken after stern notice by the committee on 'Out of Turn Allotments' made by Housing Minister Safwan Ullah to more than 3400 employees, which has created immense unrest among government employees. The committee has directed for amendment in the procedure of allotment.
The committee has also directed for construction of high-rise buildings after demolition of quarters in Sector G-6, and handing over with ownership rights to people on priority basis who are already living in these quarters.
The issue of occupation by police and employees of other departments of government accommodations was also discussed in the meeting. The committee has directed the housing ministry to end the occupation of those police employees whom the court did not give stay order.
