Punjab Finance department has released a sum of about Rs 200 million sugar cess funds to Sugarcane Growers Association (SGA). The funds have been issued by the SGA to the DCOs of districts in the sugarcane belt of the Punjab for repair and construction of roads.
The convenor SGA, Javed Malik lauded the body's efforts and the co-operation of the Punjab Finance minister and cane commissioner in this regard. According to a press release, a similar sum was also issued last year, he added.
He appealed to the concerned DCOs in the sugar growing area issued cess funds for the current crushing season, to undertake the task of road repairs and construction in rural Punjab on war footing.
An improved road structure should help save losses in the sucrose content in sugarcane to millers, and save weight loss of sugarcane through evaporation for the growers. This will also go a long to help solve the current sugar crisis, he added.
