Rakugo, a Japanese sit-down comedy, was performed at the Arts Council of Pakistan here. A statement on Friday said that the show was organised by the Japan Cultural Centre (JCC) of the Consulate General of Japan in Karachi in collaboration with the Pakistan-Japan Cultural Association, Sindh. It was sponsored by the Japan Foundation.
Rakugo, which is a traditional form of performing art, which has a long history, has been described as a Japanese sit-down comedy or comic story telling. It was performed here by Kimie Oshima, Shofukutei and Katsura. The Consul General of Japan in Karachi, Shoichi Nkano, informed on the occasion that it is the first Rakugo performance in English in Pakistan.
He said that it has a long history dating back to the end of the 17th century. The Consul General said that even today Rakugo is popular among the Japanese people. It brings laughters, which makes the people forget their problems, worries and stresses of daily life and helps them relax.
