The United Nations (UN) has approved the first ever clean development mechanism (CDM) project for Pakistan to keep the atmosphere pollution-free. The CDM is being installed at Pak-Arab Fertilisers (Pvt) Multan (PFL) plant site with mutual collaboration of Mitsubishi Corporation Japan and Pak-Arab Fertilisers at a cost of $15 million.
Brigadier Umair Ahmed (Retd), General Manager of the Pak-Arab said that clean development mechanism project aimed at reducing global warming by treating industrial emissions. It would abate nitrous oxide gas at Pak-Arab nitric acid plant, in accordance with Kyoto Protocol, a global treaty to the UN framework convention on climatic change.
Overall this project would have positive effect to environment, as nitrous oxide would be converted to Nitrogen and Oxygen by catalytically reduction before venting to atmosphere, he added.
