THE RUPEE: euro crosses Rs 80 mark in open market

The rupee came under pressure against the euro, losing 85 paisa for buying and selling at Rs 80.35 and Rs 80.45, dealers said. The rupee continued its overnight weakness in relation to the dollar in the interbank market on Friday, shedding three paisa for buying and selling at 60.89 and 60.90, respectively.
The rupee failed to come out of the weakness due to persistent demand of the US currency and it is likely that the rupee may show limited fall in the coming days, they said.
In the overseas markets, the dollar hit a 14-year low against sterling on Friday and held near a 20-month trough versus the euro as the US currency suffered from expectations a weakening economy will prompt the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates next year.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar's trading commenced at overnight closing rates of Rs 60.85 and Rs 60.95 on buying and selling sides, respectively. The dollar witnessed fractional change in its worth during the trading but finally closed at the opening levels, the dealers added.
On the contrary, the local currency registered loss against the pound sterling. The pound's buying rate improved from Thursday's closing rate of Rs 118.35 to Rs 119.25 while selling rate increased from Rs 118.65 to Rs 119.50, the dealers added.
The dollar opened at Rs 60.80 (buying) and Rs 60.90 (selling) against same previous rate. It did not observe any further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 60.80 (buying) and Rs 60.90 (selling).
Pound Sterling opened at Rs 117.10 (buying) and Rs 117.30 (selling) against same overnight value. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 117.10 (buying) and Rs 117.30 (selling).
According to the currency dealers, the dollar's demand and supply condition remained intact at overnight closing levels. As a result, there was no change in the dollar's buying and selling rates. The greenback was traded at Tuesday's closing levels of Rs 60.65 and Rs 60.75 on buying and selling sides, respectively, the dealers added.
On the contrary, the local currency lost its worth against the pound sterling. The pound's buying rate further improved from previous closing rate of Rs 106.40 to Rs 106.70, while selling rate increased from Rs 106.80 to Rs 107.00, the dealers added.
The dollar opened at Rs 60.45 (buying) and Rs 60.55 (selling) against thre last rate. It did not observe any further change in the evening spell, and closed at Rs 60.45 (buying) and Rs 60.55 (selling).
Pound sterling opened at Rs 105.10 (buying) and Rs 105.20 (selling) against the last rate. It did not witness any further change, and closed at Rs 105.10 (buying) and Rs 105.20 (selling).
