02 Dec, 2006

Syed Mustafa Kamal Nazim Karachi, on Thursday said the city government will construct a road like Lyari Expressway on both sides of Gujjar Nullah for which planning has been started.
Addressing the members of Gulberg Town Council and officials on Thursday/Friday night, the Nazim said construction of these roads would significantly reduce traffic congestion.
On the occasion he sought a complete list of employees of Gulberg Town and observed that 560 member staff is paid Rs 2.7 million in salaries, still the sanitary conditions in the Town were not satisfactory. Pointing out that absence of one employee affects 20 families he said their attendance, especially of sanitary workers, should be ensured.
He said they should be seen on roads wearing Town jackets so that people could know that Town workers are at work for them. He announced that the town would provide one tractor trolley to each of eight Union Councils, which would get it in few months. But every UC will then have to take steps for improving the sanitary conditions. If more staff would be needed even after ensuring the presence of existing staff, then they should be recruited on contract, he added.
He said it has been decided that action would be taken against T.O. if garbage were found dumped in the Town. The Nazim said the situation could improve, if the officials come out of their offices and see the conditions themselves. If they do not take action against absentee employees and sanitary conditions do not show improvement, then it would mean that they themselves are involved.
"It is the administration's responsibility to take work from those drawing salaries from people's taxes and those ignoring their responsibility cannot be excused."
Nazim Karachi took notice of slow pace of Rs 50 million worth water and sewerage improvement works and said their lines be laid prior to construction of roads and streets.
He pointed out that city government has initiated mega development projects in the city and flyovers and bridges are being constructed in the shortest time. New roads are being constructed to solve traffic problems while under-passes being constructed at round-abouts and inter-sections.
Mustafa Kamal said construction of road on both sides of Gujjar nullah would facilitate the people of Liaquatabad, Gulberg, Nazimabad, Federal B. Area and Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
In a briefing on the occasion the Nazim was informed that Gulberg Town administration is carrying out Rs 240 million worth development schemes out of which tenders for schemes costing Rs 130 million have been invited.
It was informed that development works on a number of roads were in progress including the road from Baloch Colony to Yasinabad while 30 percent water and 50 percent sewerage development works have been completed.
