Iran has formally requested for grant of observer status in the currently seven-nation South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (Saarc). A formal letter in this regard was handed over to Saarc Secretary-General by Director-General for West Asia Affairs of Iran's Foreign Affairs Ministry this week, Press Section of Iranian Embassy here said on Saturday.
Rasool Islami, in talks with Lyonpo Chenkyab Dorji, Saarc Secretary-General, in Kathmandu, said that Tehran's membership would be beneficial for both Iran and Saarc in view of its geographical position and economic strength. Saying that Iran has close ties with Saarc member states, he requested for its membership. Dorji said Iran inclusion would be beneficial for both sides. Iran's request will be taken up at Saarc Foreign Ministers' meeting in April at New Delhi.
