President Pervez Musharraf has reiterated the government's pledge to continue accelerated development and empowerment of women and vowed to take all necessary steps to fully realise their tremendous potential in national development.
"We wish to reaffirm our national and international commitments for the protection of women's rights in the country, with special emphasis on this year's theme 'Ending impunity for violence against women and girls'," President Musharraf said in a message on International Women's Day. The President mentioned the recent commendable measures taken by the government for the empowerment of women and said "these would go a long way in our quest for the emancipation of the women of Pakistan".
"The historic legislation and the practical steps taken are a clear sign of the government's strong will, unwavering commitment and determination to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women with the ultimate goal of making them equal, active and dignified partners in all spheres of life, as given by our great religion Islam and enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan," Musharraf said.
Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has called for an end to the violation of women's political, economic, social and legal rights and said the government is effectively playing its role for providing women a secure environment to lead prosperous life. In a message on International Women's Day, the Prime Minister said the day not only reminds the historic struggle of women for their equal rights but also marks the reiteration of commitment for the cause of women at national level.
