'Lawyers urged not to become tool for politicians'

18 Mar, 2007

Defining lawyers as important segment of society, Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim urged them to avoid becoming a tool for politicians. Addressing to a 'Sindh Lawyers Convention-2007' on Saturday at the CM House, he said there was no dispute between judiciary and President Pervez Musharraf.
However, some elements of vested interests willing to turn Pakistan into Afghanistan, are fanning this issue. "It may be an international conspiracy as well," he said. "Being elite cadre of society, lawyers should keep themselves informed with international scenario as to foil all conspiracies against the country," he added.
He asked lawyer fraternity not to be influenced by opinion of politicians but take decision according to their will. He said some political parties, which even ruled for twice had done nothing for public and now their activists wearing black coats were protesting in Islamabad. He said in Nawaz Sharif era the worst example was set by attacking the Supreme Court while PPP arrested session judge during its regime and put its opponents behind bars, adding now these parties were exerting pressure on government in the name of supporting judiciary.
He opined lawyers should be inducted in legislative institutions so that optimal legislation could be made. Arbab announced to establish a co-operative society and endowment fund for lawyers for their welfare. He also announced to move Deputy District Attorney up to BPS-18 from BPS-17 while District Attorney from BPS-18 to BPS-19.
