Torture on lawyers: proceedings adjourned till March 26

Enquiry Commission headed by Justice Syed Zahid Hussain of Lahore High Court (LHC), constituted to fix the responsibility of police torture on the peaceful protesting lawyers and common citizens has adjourned the proceedings till March 26 and directed all those who want to take part in the inquiry, file their affidavits by next date of hearing with the inquiry registrar.
The judge observed that the journalists and advocate general Punjab agreed that the court may adopt any procedure, which may enable it to reach a conclusion of the inquiry within shortest possible time.
The court held that these are not adversarial proceedings but fall within the realm of inquisitorial system. President Punjab Union of Journalists informed the court that a meeting had been convened with the Chief Secretary and Information Secretary and the matter was being processed.
It may be mentioned that the inquiry commission was constituted under the directions of Supreme Court of Pakistan for fixation of responsibility upon delinquent police officials for alleged brutality and torture on journalists and bar members.
