Kharif output targets to be set on April 10

26 Mar, 2007

The Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) will meet here on April 10 to set production targets of Kharif crops, including cotton for coming season and to review the performance of Rabi crops including wheat. Food Minister Sikandar Hayat Khan Bosan has also convened an informal meeting of concerned officials on April 2 to review the situation prior to the FCA.
Besides cotton, the FCA would also set production estimates for some other Kharif crops like rice and sugarcane. It would review the performance of other Rabi crops like gram and potato.
The government last month initiated preliminary exercise for gathering data to set crops targets for Kharif season at the Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) meeting.
Kharif and Rabi are two crop seasons start from April and October respectively. The FCA is a high powered committee that meets twice a year ahead of either of the seasons to fix and review the crop targets.
Extension and crop reporting services departments of all four provinces and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) are responsible for data gathering exercise.
At the FCA meeting, the availability of water and other inputs like pesticides and herbicides would also be reviewed to take appropriate decision in this regard.
