The famous Liaqat Bagh and its adjacent parks in the heart of the city have been gradually regaining their past glorious as the renovation work is nearing completion. Despite scarcity of funds, the Rawalpindi Development Authority has been carrying out the development works with the help of donors and more than eighty percent of work has been completed so far.
The whole garden was ruined during the construction of Committee Chowk Underpass as the contractors had dumped all debris in this historic garden. An official in the authority told APP that the contractors had made an agreement with the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) that as soon as the work of the underpass was over, they would repair the garden at their own cost.
However, the official maintained, despite vigorous efforts by the RDA, the said contractors did not pay any heed towards the issue.
He said that RDA has re-established the garden with the help of some donors who have been donating funds for the reconstruction purposes.
He said some donors provided funds for laying grass, planting saplings and repairing the lightening of the garden while others funded for making benches, gate and jogging tracks.
The official said that construction of a stage is underway with the help of donors, which would be completed very soon.
He said much of the plantation of the garden has been done and added further plantation of saplings would be carried out in the current season to give the garden a fascinating look.
He said work on adjacent children and women parks would also be completed very soon to provide recreational facilities to the children as well as women.
He said that boundary walls for both of these parks have been erected, adding that grass has been laid in Women Park and necessary plantation has also been done there.
He said the RDA has also raised the issue of funds with the Punjab government and expressed the hope that the government would also allocate funds for the project.
