Two American companies Nixon Peabody LLP and Crystal Water Alliance (CWA) have shown interest to generate power from garbage and decided to visit the landfill sites of Karachi in the next two days to review basic needs and facilities required for construction of power generation plant.
Representatives of Nixon and Chairman CWA Iel L. Lin Dblom accompanied with Kings Group Chairman Aziz Memon Friday called on Naib Nazim Karachi Nasreen Jalil at her office. Nasreen Jalil told the delegation about 8,000 tons of garbage is generated daily in the metropolis while hardly 3,000 tons reach the landfill sites.
She said two landfill sites are in the city, one at Jam Sakro near Sarjani Town and other at Gond Pass, Hub River Road. "Asian Development Bank has announced $40 million to upgrade garbage transfer system," she added.
She apprised 453 vehicles are currently used in 18 towns of the city to lift garbage. The city government wants to ensure all litter is shifted to the landfill site and welcomes all companies interested in improvement of garbage transfer system and power generation from it, she said. DO-1 Solid Waste Management Kalid Javed, Principal Secretary Syed Athar Hussain were also present.
