Jamia Hafsa issue to be resolved under law: Sherpao

03 Apr, 2007

Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao said on Sunday the issue of Jamia Hafsa would be resolved in accordance with the law of the land. Talking to a private television channel, he said speculations regarding raid on the seminary should be avoided.
Sanctity of the seminary must be kept in mind as around 3,500 female students are getting education there. "Writ of the government is in tact. It is up to us to take suitable course for achieving the targets. Bloodshed would be avoided. However the government's property would remain its property," he said.
Regarding the forceful confinement and subsequent release of three women at Islamabad's seminary a few days ago, he said action would be taken against the culprits as a case had already been registered against them.
Responding to a question regarding latest situation in Fata, he said tribal elders had time and again warned the foreigners to quit, as they were no more prepared to allow them to live anymore in their areas. He said tribals had asked the foreigners to surrender but they resorted to bloody confrontation. So far around 180 to 190 people had been killed in tribal areas.
