Supreme Court moved against Lal Masjid Fatwa

10 Apr, 2007

Journalist Shahid Orakzai has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the clerics of Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa Abdul Aziz and Ghazi Abdur Rashid for setting up self-styled Sharia courts, issuance of one-sided Fatwas and attempts to Talibanise the society.
The interior ministry has also been made a party for allowing these elements to create a state within the State. The petitioner has prayed that the Supreme Court should direct the federal government not to allow any religious group or sect to establish, maintain, or manage any parallel institutions which are in conflict with the institutions established under the Constitution or the law.
The apex court's directions are also sought to declare that no political party or association shall try, convict or acquit any person and any violation of public morality must be handed over to law.
It has also been prayed that the Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa clerics and the interior ministry must be directed to refrain from doing anything that harms the rights of the citizens under the Constitution.
