'Standard of society measured by literacy rate'

Expenditures on education is the investment of future that gives us long time results in the shape of country's progress and national prosperity. This was stated by the Vice Chancellor of Punjab University Arshad Mahmood during the prize distribution ceremony of the university here on Thursday.
He said that knowledge made a great difference and standard of society was measured by its literacy rate. He said that we compared ourselves with Europe but their education, training and social values are prominent in their progress but we are far behind in all these things.
He said that President Musharraf's government had taken many bold steps to promote education including establishment of National Task Force and Higher Education Commission to provide funds to educational institutions. He said that universities are getting much higher grants than they were getting in 1947 and Punjab University has got Rs 2.5 billion in the last five years.
