20 Apr, 2007

Lawyers on Thursday continued their token protest against the suspension of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry, and boycotted court proceedings for one hour. There were corner meetings of the Karachi Bar Council and the Sindh High Court Bar council.
Protesting lawyers expressed their solidarity with the non-functional Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and resolved to continue their struggle till the dignity of the judiciary and that of the office of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is restored.
In the meantime, preparations for the April 22 lawyers convention and arrangement to accommodate more than 5,000 lawyers from different parts of the country were given final shape. Political parties though divided on the subject are still expected to participate in big number.
Lawyers are trying to make it a big event as including the non-functional chief justice a large number of lawyers and office-bearers of the bar councils will address the convention. The convention is likely to chart out future course of action.
