The Sukkur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has urged the ministries of Railway, Finance and Commerce to expedite the process for the establishment of Dry Port at Sukkur in order to promote business and industrial activities of this downtrodden area.
In a communication to the ministries, the chamber pointed out that the federal government in the year of 1986 decided to include Sukkur in dry port schemes.
Finally, the draft notification was sent under No C-41 (1) ESTT/94/1143 of September 30,1998 by the collector customs and central excise Hyderabad for approval to Central Board of Revenue (CBR) which is still in pending.
The chamber said that the matter of Sukkur Dry Port again came under discussion in the meeting of Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet on May 17, 2006, submitted by the CBR. The ECC approved the summary and asked the collector to consult the Railway authorities, Sukkur for provision of the infrastructure facilities and send the draft notification for establishment of dry port.
The DS Railway was assigned the task for preparing detailed justification/estimates in this respect. Railway Authorities selected the Arain Road, Railway Station for the establishment of dry port. The estimates and drawing prepared by DS Railway, Sukkur, have been forwarded to Railway Headquarter Lahore for approval.
