22 Apr, 2007

High government officials have said the reference against Chief Justice Mr Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry has been filed strictly in accordance with law and the Constitution of Pakistan. During a briefing of the electronic media representatives in Islamabad on Saturday, officials said that the Supreme Judicial Council should decide the reference.
They said that the Chief Justice Mr Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry has misused his powers. There is a serious judicial crisis in the country, they noted. Speaking about Jamia Hafsa, the officials said it is a sensitive issue and use of force would be the last option for its solution.
They said that nine of ten demands of the Jamia Hafsa have already been accepted and only the question of occupation of library by the students of Jamia remains unresolved.
NNI adds: The government will not withdraw the presidential reference against Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, official sources said. The sources said the government has decided to vigorously pursue the reference.
