Road safety measures

26 Apr, 2007

After NH and MP took the responsibility on highways, the accident rate has dropped by 70% and crime rate declined to near zero in the area of their jurisdiction. Moreover, millions of commuters have been provided help in distress during their travel.
In this way, this department has got a pioneering position in enlightening the society with new avenues of road safety. Their close liaison with sister organisation ie National Highway Authority and other auxiliary security forces, has proved incredibly prolific for the road users. The success story of National Highways and Motorway Police can be summarised in a phrase "Hard Work".
The struggle and mission towards achieving optimum road safety does not end here. It is rather a preliminary stage of development in this field. This goal, however, can only be achieved with the concerted efforts of Government and public at large.
Here are some suggestions which may be considered for achieving the desired results. A separate subject of road safety should be incorporated in the syllabus to create traffic sense and the awareness among the masses.
Children below 18 years of age must be discouraged to drive. This can only be done through the efforts of parents/patrons and traffic laws enforcement agencies.
Fitness of vehicles is another area that requires more attention of the government and public. Vehicle owners must ensure fitness of their vehicles without which life of every road user is at stake.
Truck and trailer drivers work throughout the year without any break. They become physically and mentally exhausted and cannot drive for long distances. Transporters should be asked to take care of drivers.
Frequent use of horns should be avoided because it adds to noise pollution and other problems. Major part of our population uses motorcycles. Use of helmets should be made compulsory. The color and font of the registration number of all the vehicles should be designed according to a set pattern. Last but not the least, a separate TV channel or an FM radio channel should be installed to create awareness among general masses.
